I’ve been describes as many things.

My husband John likes to call me a hippy. I guess that is sort of true. I do want a commune, I like that the sexual revolution freed people to express themselves, I’m pretty liberal and I am all about eating organic, non GMO, healthy food. I like my blue jeans and my long flowing skirts go well with my long flowing hair.

But I can also look like I stepped right out of a high powered board room. I know how to dress like an executive and can sport a chignon that is classic and conservative. Once I was helping my son Adam with an event he was putting together in Santa Barbara and went to a meeting there to see if I could help. Later one of the men from the committee asked “Who is the power woman Adam brought in to help?” Someone laughed and said “That’s his mom”. Continue reading

Food is a wonderful thing.

You eat healthy food and you thrive – simple, right?

I guess if it were that simple there wouldn’t be TV shows like “My 600 pound life”. For those people, food became so much more than a way to stay alive – it became a way to fix old emotions and hurts that they carried with them through life. I won’t begin to say that I understand that, because I don’t. Continue reading

I don’t have a lot of what I would call close friends, but I’m okay with that.

I thought it was because it takes me a long time to really get close to someone – or let them get close to me. But my best friend pointed something out to me just the other day. She said I test.

When I asked her what she meant, she said I test people to see if they are going to stick around. And when I thought about it, I had to admit, she was right.

Maybe the reason I tested was because some of them didn’t stick around… Continue reading

I’m sick of always being the Indian!

Two of my bothers, Johnny and David, and I used to play Cowboys & Indians on the small farm in Michigan where we grew up.  It never seemed to fail that they were the cowboys and I was the Indian.  I had a make shift bow and some sticks for arrows.  They had toy guns and sometimes even the kind that had this rolled up red paper with actual gunpowder on it that would pop when fired.  My arrows didn’t really fly and I usually felt a bit overwhelmed by the cowboys and their cap guns.  Continue reading

Rocks and all…

I’ve always loved rocks.

From the time I was little, I seemed to fill my pockets full of them whenever I went to the beach or even just on a short walk.  I grew up in Michigan just off Lake Michigan, and we would go to the beach often.  I would wander off for hours in search of treasures to pickup and admire.

When it was time to go home, my Mom would make me empty my pockets before climbing into the car.  She said I didn’t need all those rocks at home.  Maybe that’s why I kept looking for new ones every time I was out… I didn’t get to bring any home with me.

Since those days, I’ve collected lots of rocks.  Mostly heart shaped ones.  They seem to just jump out at me.

John and I went to the beach yesterday.  We found green rocks, red ones, white ones, black and heart shaped ones.  I filled my pockets full.  We had a great time.  When we got back to the car, he didn’t make me feel silly that I wanted to bring all those rocks back home with me.  He just smiled at me.

It’s nice to be with someone who lets me be me, rocks and all.

Best Friends

My best friend wrote this about me…..

“I have this friend that is really amazing.

She can do anything, if she doesn’t know how, she learns how.  She is very smart, both book smart and street smart.

She is one of the best mom’s I know.  Her children are really wonderful, successful, grounded young adults.

She is intriguing, alluring and quit beautiful.  She makes a lasting impression on you, whether you know her for a short time or forever.  And she always seems to touch the people she comes in contact with.

She lives life deliberately….and looks forward to the next adventure.  She knows the Universe is her co-creator, and has her back.  Everything she touches turns to gold.

Sometimes I think she forgets this, and needs a reminder.”

This is what a best friend looks like.  I am truly blessed.
